Restless leg syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move your legs, generally because of a building and uncomfortable sensation that occurs otherwise. It tends to happen more frequently in the evening or night time when you are sitting or lying down. Although the relief is only temporary, moving the legs does relieve the uncomfortable sensation. At Pulmonary Obesity & Sleep Specialists of Houston, we can help you manage the symptoms of RLS through the use of medication or recommended lifestyle changes.
The primary symptom of RLS is the urge to move your legs; however, other complementary symptoms often include:
- Relief created by movement
- Worsening symptoms in the evening
- Nighttime leg twitching, known as periodic limb movement of sleep
- Sensations that start after being at rest for extended periods, such as long trips in cars or airplanes
Those with RLS describe the sensations as occurring deep within the limb, not the skin, and may feel like:
- Crawling
- Creeping
- Pulling
- Throbbing
- Aching
- Itching
- Electric
Researchers are still studying the causes and risk factors associated with RLS, but they suspect an imbalance of dopamine in the brain is a crucial factor. Dopamine sends messages to control muscle movement, and as such, an imbalance can lead to the unwanted sensations that cause almost compulsory body movement. Heredity also plays an essential role in the development of RLS, especially when diagnosed before the age of 40. Pregnancy can temporarily create or worsen RLS, but the symptoms generally go away after delivery.
